Abstract: Guido è un regista, quarantenne, un po' stanco. Tutto ciò che lo riguarda è stanco: il rapporto con la moglie, col suo produttore, con gli amici, persino con l'amante. Naturalmente l'ispirazione si è fatta sottile, le idee sono rare e astratte, la pigrizia avanza. Ha fatto costruire un'immensa e costosa impalcatura che forse servirà per un film di fantasia, forse. Infatti lo stesso Guido non sa perché l'abbia fatta costruire. Intorno a lui si muovono tutti i "fenomeni" del cinema: tecnici che urlano, amanti di produttori, velleitari che propongono sceneggiature, anziane attrici che aspirano a un ultimo colpo di coda. Guido rincorre idea dopo idea, tutte scialbe e abbandonate. Un critico di cinema dal linguaggio inverosimilmente ermetico gli smonta una per una tutte le iniziative. Cerca un po' d'aiuto in un alto prelato, che in risposta alle sue angosce gli parla di cardellini. Per fortuna la sua fantasia può correre liberamente nel passato, nell'età dell'adolescenza, nella sua prima terra ai tempi della scuola e delle prime sensazioni. Non-professional Carlo Battisti plays Umberto Domenico Ferrari, a retired civil servant with no friends, family or prospects to speak of, only his dog Flike for company. Umberto lives only on his meagre pension and in dire surroundings with a grasping landlady. He has fallen behind on his rent and after many indignities finally reaches a point where suicide seems like the only answer. However he puts those thoughts aside when he realises that Flike would be left to the streets if he was not there
