New York : Atheneum, 2023

Abstract: Prince Siddhartha lives in a beautiful palace in the heart of Kapilavastu. His father, the king, ensures that he has the best of everything—he just can’t go outside. He is locked up away from the city, away from anything that might cause him pain. He knows nothing of illness, aging, sorrow, or death, yet Siddhartha feels the pain regardless, and it instills a burning curiosity to understand the world outside—and the nature of human suffering. Based on the life of the real man who was known first as a prince, then as a monk, and now as the Gautama Buddha, Enlightened is about one boy’s quest to learn the truth that underpins our endless struggle against suffering—and in understanding, break the cyclic existence that perpetuates it.

Haig, Joan - Lennon, Joan

Great mind / written by Joan Haig and Joan Lennon ; illustrated by André Ducci

London : Templar books, 2023

Abstract: What’s philosophy for?, asks this large format, stylishly illustrated information book; and it comes to the conclusion that it’s a tool to change the world. Over its 60+ pages, we are introduced to the philosophers who have shaped the way we think. First up is Confucius and his exploration of what makes a good person; from there, we meet the ancient Greek philosphers, Socrates, Aristotle and Plato; then the focus moves to the Islamic world and thinkers such as Ibn Rushd, probably less well known to general readers in the UK, but hugely important (a panel explains Ibn Rushd’s influence on those who took part in the Arab Spring for example). The book continues to follow a timeline while ranging across the world, the connection between philosophers from different cultures and civilisations made clear and it demonstrates how ideas formed hundreds or even thousands of years ago are still influencing way people think today. The final sections bring us right up to date with Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, the Black American thinker who developed critical race theory and the framework for intersectionality. It’s a fascinating and thought-provoking book, and with the world facing so many critical moral issues a really important one to share with young people.

Sydney [etc.] : Allen & Unwin, 2023

Abstract: Join maverick inventor Steve Mushin as he tackles climate change with an avalanche of mind-bending, scientifically plausible inventions to rewild cities and save the planet. Through marvellously designed and hilarious engineering ideas, Mushin shares his vision for super-high-tech urban rewilding, covering the science of climate change, futuristic materials and foods, bio reactors, soil, forest ecosystems, mechanical flight, solar thermal power and working out just how fast we could actually turn roads into jungles, absorb carbon and reverse climate change

The girl and the glim / created, written and illustrated by India Swift ; colors by Michael Doig

San Diego : IDW, 2022

Abstract: An original graphic novel about being the new kid in a different school, getting picked on by the class bullies, and what happens when a magical presence takes notice. Like, can things get any worse? Starting out at a new school is tough, and Bridgette isn't having much luck, seeing as, well, she's not great at making a first impression. Or, maybe, any impression. Ugh, all these nervous feelings! Will I fit in? Will I make new friends? Will they still like me when they get to know me? Nope. For now the best she can manage is... awkward. This is not going great. That's when she sees it. Something dark and scary... something only she can see. And she’s scared, of course she is. But as the only one able to see the dangers, maybe it's time for her to face that fear and unravel the mystery of the Glim and the Glums. The Girl and The Glim is about accepting the fact that fear is okay, and that while letting other people see your vulnerabilities can be scary, it can also lead to closer friendships in the end.
