Abstract: Non c'è nulla che Jordan Banks ami di più del disegnare fumetti, eppure i suoi genitori scelgono per lui una prestigiosa accademia privata al posto della tanto sognata scuola d'arte. Diviso tra i suoi sogni e la realtà, Jordan dovrà fare i conti con un ambiente nuovo ed ignoto dove si ritrova ad essere uno dei pochi alunni afroamericani. La posta in gioco è alta: riuscirà Jordan a mantenere in equilibrio aspettative e desideri, vecchi amici del quartiere e nuovi compagni di scuola? Troverà il suo posto restando comunque se stesso? Il primo graphic novel ad aver vinto la Newbery Medal porta avanti temi di incredibile attualità. Se da un lato New Kid ripropone temi classici della letteratura per ragazzi, dall'altro trova la sua forza e quindi, la sua novità, nell'apertura al dialogo su tematiche quali l'integrazione, la solidarietà e il convinto rifiuto di ogni forma di razzismo. Forse il messaggio più importante dell'opera è la celebrazione della forza del singolo che può e anzi, deve saper lottare per vedere un cambiamento nel mondo che lo circonda. La fine del racconto lascia il lettore speranzoso nei confronti delle nuove generazioni e delle battaglie che sapranno intraprendere. Età di lettura: da 11 anni

Abstract: Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade.
