Abstract: It is a traditional folk custom in China’s Central Shaanxi Plain to “play with lanterns” to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Little Zhaodi has received a lantern from her uncle and is happy to join her playmates in the game. In a merry and poetically expressive voice, the narrator tells about a childhood that today mostly only exists in people’s recollections. Zhu Chengliang vividly illustrates the festive atmosphere and the joyfulness of the playing children against the backdrop of snow-covered village streets, evoking a sense of nostalgia in the realization that all this will soon be over, just like the tradition itself. Zhu Chengliang is the illustrator of “Tuan Yuan” (A New Year’s Union), which was selected into The New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2011. He was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2016. Wang Yage is a young writer majoring in Classical Chinese Literature. “Da deng long” is her debut in picture books.

Ogni anno, durante i giorni più freddi, Nian saliva in superficie e divorava tutti gli abitanti del vicino villaggio. Tra questi viveva un bambino che, stanco di nascondersi, tirò fuori tutto il suo ingegno e il suo coraggio e riuscì a sconfiggere il mostro usando degli oggetti che divennero così il simbolo della più importante festività cinese.

This Cinderella story, the oldest known version of the famous fairy tale, originates from China. Instead of a fairy godmother, a magical red fish grants Yeh-hsien her dearest wish – to go to the Spring Festival. When Yeh-hsien loses her slipper, the king searches all over the land looking for the woman who fits the tiny golden shoe… This Chinese version of the Cinderella story is an excellent example of how traditional tales are often replicated across different languages and cultures. Yeh-hsien provides a platform for discussing the variations between legends from different parts of world, and for studying the fairy tale tradition more widely.

Abstract: Grandmother decides to leave her village to spend Chinese New Year in the town for the sake of her granddaughter Xiaoyue. Grandmother brings a gorgeous rooster for Xiaoyue, but Xiaoyue wants to raise it instead of cooking it into a pot of delicious chicken soup. But will the neighbors agree? How can a rooster be raised as a pet? Grandmother and the Rooster is a story on family love setting the background in Spring Festival, one of the traditional Chinese festivals. The author integrates all the Spring Festival customs, such as pasting spring couplets, paying new year's visit in the neighbourhood, hanging red lanterns, children's wearing new clothes and so on into the background of the story, and pushes the love of grandmother towards Xiaoyue, the kinship, the rural life fading from the memory of city people and the cherishing of childhood to the front stage of the story. It reflects people's recollection of the rural life and civilization they have experienced as well as their nostalgia for the past in the rural area, and expresses the light homesickness shared by people
